PARYS.- Following an exchange of fire between suspects and the police in Parys a 42-year-old suspect has been arrested for attempted murder.

In a statement police spokesperson Sergeant Josephine Rani said: “It is alleged that on Sunday, 26 February at about 01:05, the Fezile Dabi District Trio Task Team and DOCC members received information about theft of copper cable in progress at King Street, Parys.”

The members responded swiftly to the information and on their arrival at the scene, the members noticed one suspect armed with a rifle and he started to shoot at the police. The members retaliated and four unknown suspects managed to flee the scene on foot.”

According to Rani, Sergeant Morena Semase attached to DOCC was wounded on the right shoulder.

“The member was transported to Alberton Netcare for medical treatment. The arrested suspect was also wounded. He was taken to Parys Hospital for medical treatment and later detained.”

The suspect appeared before the Parys Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 28 February 2023 on the charges of attempted murder and for being in the country without documentation.
