Vereeniging Art Society celebrates a rich history

The Vereeniging Art Society with its 39 members celebrated their 50th anniversary with much pride and enthusiasm. This was at the end of last year at The Duif Art Centre, Unitas Park.

Back in 1972, Sheila Santilhano, an honorary member today, became the first Chairlady and was ably assisted by Jeanette Burton Durham, Annette Hall and Robin Mc Lean. These dynamic artists ensured the solid foundation the society enjoy today.

Malene Wattenbach joined the society in 1988, and Rosemary Girard in 1999. Both ladies are still active members of the Vereeniging Art Society.

The society were also delighted to have Chrysoula Argyros as a visitor at the celebration. An international recognised miniaturist, her mentor many years ago was Sheila Santillhana.

Chrysoula has won many South African and international awards, and is still very active in her artistic journey.

Meetings were first held in private homes, whereafter the society moved to Kariba Lodge for many years. Meetings are now held at The Duif Art Centre in Unitas Park on the third Saturday of every month (thanks to Chairlady Mattie Joubert for the use of her facility.

Meetings are held on a monthly basis. Mini workshops, crits of artists’ paintings by qualified art teachers, informative talks about “The Masters” e.g. Van Gogh, Maggie Louscher, Monet, exhibitions and many more interesting topics form part of their programme.

Another highlight is a regular three-dayworkshop by well-known South African artists. Monthly competitions are held with the theme “Copy the Masters”.

The Vereeniging Art Society also boasts a permanent exhibition at the Midvaal Hospital where artists exhibit their paintings.

As a result, they receive exposure and an opportunity to sell their works. This year’s annual competition was titled “Dreaming” and Annette Schultz won first prize with her painting.
