Marikana residents unite to celebrate Heritage Day in style

Scores of Marikana residents celebrated Heritage Day in Style.

MARIKANA – Residents of the Marikana informal settlement just outside Bophelong, came out in their numbers to celebrate Heritage Day.

This comes after dozens showcased their diverse cultural heritage with enthusiasm and pride, transforming their normally quiet streets into a fashion parade proudly flaunting different traditional attires.

Some donned old-school garments, while others slayed in modern designs inspired by different heritages.

The day kicked off with a dance session where different performers captivated the crowd with ancient traditional dances.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, organiser and founding chairperson of the Unified Civic Organisation Lehlonolo Beya explained the importance of bringing residents together in a celebratory event.

“Heritage is not merely cultural, but an inheritance passed down from our forefathers. The only thing black people can take pride in today is their traditional clothes, as they have no wealth or land to claim. The problem began in the 1600s with the arrival of foreign influences, followed by colonialism and Apartheid. As a result, black people have little to inherit,” he said.

“We organised this event to pass down cultural teachings to these young children growing up in this informal settlement. Imparting knowledge is the least we can do for our children as they have nothing to show in means of heritage,” he said.
