Elderly people celebrate heritage in style

The main purpose of the event was to keep elderly people active and healthy.

VANDERBIJLPARK. – The South African Active Aging Society celebrated Heritage Day in style.

The organisation arranged for elderly people to take part in bowling at the Cecil Oldridge Park Bowling Club on Tuesday (September 24).

These elderly people from different areas had a fun-filled day competing against each other in bowling. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, the founder of the organisation, Sonti Kubheka said the main purpose of the event was to keep elderly people active and healthy. She told Sedibeng Ster that elderly people need activities like this to keep them busy.

Kubheka said when they started the organisation last year, the purpose was to bring the elderly people together in their community to share their challenges. She said some of the challenges the elderly people face within the community is their children and grandchildren who are involved with drugs.

“There is a lot that these elderly people are dealing with in the community and some of them had to take responsibility for their grandchildren and their children. We all know that in most cases elderly people who stay with their granddaughters are forced to take care of their children. These are some of the things that as the organisation we are dealing with. You saw for yourself how excited they were to bowl and be interactive with one another. It was a day well spent and they will go home much relieved from their stress,” said Kubheka.

These elderly people enjoyed each and every moment of bowling throughout the day. Apart from bowling, Kubheka said, they also play soccer.
