Rising crime wave hits Vanderbijlpark and Bophelong

SAPS warns residents of Vanderbijlpark and Bophelong of rising house-breakings.

VANDERBIJLPARK – Police have issued a stern warning to residents in Vanderbijlpark and Bophelong to be extremely cautious as these areas have recently been rocked by a surge in house break-ins and common assault incidents.

According to police spokesperson Sergeant Sabelo Sigcu criminals are reportedly scouting homes during the day, cruising through the streets in various vehicles and identifying homes left unguarded.

These brazen criminals are said to observe properties over time, striking when residents are away and their homes are left vulnerable.

Earlier this month, former editor of Vaalweekblad Retha Fitchat and her family also fell victim to this trend.

Robbers gained access in broad daylight by forcing open two sturdy security gates and the wooden front door with a crowbar.

Following the incident, police advise the public to be alert.

“Secure your homes before leaving, even if it’s just for a short while. All doors and windows should be locked, and any unfamiliar vehicles lurking in your neighbourhood should be reported without delay,” Sigcu said.

He said despite rising concerns, authorities are also battling delayed crime reporting.

“Many victims take months before coming forward to report their cases, allowing crucial evidence to be lost or tampered with. It’s unacceptable that some people are only reporting a crime months after it happened. By then, vital clues are gone, making investigations nearly impossible,” warned Sigcu.

“The community is being urged to open a case docket immediately after being aware of the criminal activity that occurred.”

Station Commander Brigadier Phiwe Ndwandwe is pleading with residents to act swiftly, saying: “We need the community to work hand in hand with the police. Together, we can curb these criminal activities before they spiral out of control.”
