VANDERBIJLPARK – Bonginkosi Mkhatshwa’s journey to become a recognised visual artist is a remarkable story of passion, talent, and perseverance.
Growing up in the small village of Mangweni in Mpumalanga, Mkhatshwa was deeply influenced by his uncle, who created stunning portraits of South African icons.
Watching his uncle’s artistic process sparked an early interest in art for Mkhatshwa.
As he began to draw himself, he discovered a natural talent that quickly turned into a serious commitment.
By the time he reached Matric, Mkhatshwa had a clear realisation that art was more than just a passion.
This revelation set him on a path that would lead him to the Vaal University of Technology (VUT), where he pursued his passion for art with determination.
At VUT, Mkhatshwa earned a Diploma, an Advanced Diploma, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Fine Arts with each of these qualifications helping him develop his skills and understanding of the art world.
While studying, Mkhatshwa’s dedication didn’t go unnoticed.
He was guided and supported by his lecturers, Nkululeko Khumalo and Gilbert Maepa.
Their mentorship played a crucial role in shaping his artistic and professional growth.
Mkhatshwa credits them with being a significant influence in his academic success and his ongoing development as an artist.
After completing his studies, Mkhatshwa took on a role as an Arts Administrator intern at the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture.
In this position, he applies his artistic knowledge to support and promote the arts within his community.
This role allows him to stay connected to the art world while contributing to the broader cultural landscape.
Mkhatshwa’s hard work and dedication have recently been recognised with a merit award at the 2024 #SasolNewSignatures Art Competition.
This accolade is a significant milestone in his career and serves as a strong affirmation that he is on the right track.
The award not only validates his artistic efforts but also boosts his motivation to continue pursuing his passion.
In his artwork, Mkhatshwa strives to capture the spirit of South Africa’s youth. He focuses on depicting their optimism and cultural strength, even when facing challenges.
