Police march against mounting gender-based violence

Fezile Dabi District police took a stern move in a bid to teach and create awareness about Gender-Based-Violence.

SASOLBURG – With the scourge of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) mounting in Sasolburg, police and other external partners came together to send a strong message through a fun walk and sports against crime games on Wednesday, August 28.

Singing and chanting with banners calling for the disgrace of GBV, hundreds paraded around the CDB, and surrounding residential areas before ending up at Flavius Mareka sports grounds.

Different speakers took to the podium to denounce the plague, with some stakeholders vowing to work in arms with police to put an end to student-related crimes.

A perfect example was an incident which happened three years ago, where the college student was raped.

While grappling with the incident, the victim was said to have become mentally unstable as she failed to contract with her ordeal.

Speaking to Ster South, Warrant Officer Abby Selebana from Viljoenskroon SAPS and the district chairperson for the Sports Club explained the purpose of the event.

“Students are victims of crime on a daily around the college and we can’t just sit and watch. We decided to organising this programme as an awareness campaign and an informative project to teach students how to report GBV-related cases,” he said.

Selebana warned perpetrators of victimising students saying “There are responsible citizens of this country who are watching you. We are coming for you!”

Polmed, Popcru, and Sinqobile were some of the march’s partners.
