From township beauty contests to Miss Teen Universe stage

Meet Masego Maphoto from Sharpeville who is a runner-up for the Miss Teen Universe South Africa finals.

SEDIBENG – Over the years, she watched as other teenage girls from all walks of life entered Miss Teen, but her lack of confidence simply couldn’t let her enroll.

This year she finally found herself sending her entry at the last minute.

Little did she know, she would be among the bunch of favourites contesting for the pageant.

Masego Maphoto is a runner-up for the finals as she was selected Miss Teen Universe South Africa.
The 19-year-old Sharpeville-born beauty is flying the Vaal flag high.

Passionate about sharing her story, Maphoto told Ster South how her grandparents stood up for her when she chose modelling as a hobby back in primary school.

“I began my modelling journey in 2017. From a young age, I was captivated by modelling shows on TV, and I knew that it was something I wanted to pursue. With the unwavering support of my grandparents, I enrolled with a modelling agency during my seventh grade in primary school and I participated in various pageants marking the beginning of my modelling career,” she said.

Touching on her Miss Teen Universe voyage, Maphoto said: “I sent my entry in June and I was soon selected as a semi-finalist. My supporters were then given the opportunity to vote for me to become a finalist. I was fortunate to be among the top participants.”

“Being a finalist means a great deal to me because my aim is not solely to win the crown, but to make a meaningful impact in my community. I am passionate about empowering young children to pursue their dreams,” she said.

When asked what winning the pageant would mean to her, the student pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Education answered: “It would mean a great deal to me. Not only would it affirm that I am capable of achieving what I set my mind to, but it would also allow me to inspire those around me. Additionally, I would use this platform to raise awareness about low cognitive issues and make a positive impact in society.”

For Maphoto the pageant is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

The finals are set to take place on March 23, 2025 in Polokwane.
