Man dies in horrific shack fire

Ward 22 Councillor Christopher Zitha urged the community to take more precautions when dealing with things that could potentially cause fires, resulting in the loss of life.

SHARPEVILLE – The family of Thapelo Selikane (40) is reeling after he tragically lost his life in a shack fire on August 2. The incident happened at the Soul City informal settlement in Tshepiso, where Selikane had only lived for a week.

Selikane’s neighbours say they heard someone calling for help in the early hours of the morning. Upon further inspection, they noticed that his shack was on fire. More neighbours were called to the scene but it was too late for Selikane, who allegedly burned beyond recognition.

Speaking to Ster North, Nonzukiso Mkhonto (34) said that they tried to open the shack but a chain was used to lock the door.

“Everyone fought to put the fire out but it was too strong. By the time the fire went out, it was too late.”

Mkhonto said they do not have electricity in that area and they often use candles as a source of light. According to her that could have been the source of the fire.

Ward 22 Councillor Christopher Zitha said he was horrified at the sight of Selikane’s body. Calling this the most horrific scene he had ever come across.

Zitha cautioned the community about the amount of shack fires over the winter season. He urged the community to take more precautions when dealing with things that could potentially cause fires, resulting in the loss of life.

Selikane’s uncle, Moses Mokonyane (48) said the family is still trying to come to terms with the loss.

“I was alerted about the incident on Friday morning, I was on my way home after my nightshift. Seeing how my nephew lost his life is devastating. All we want to do as the family is lay him to rest.”

Sharpeville police spokesperson Constable Busisiwe Sango confirmed the incident.
