DA condemns closure of Sasolburg Landfill Site

"Whenever the DA questions the Executive Mayor in the council, he promises to investigate but never provides answers." said DA Caucus Leader Metsimaholo Local Municipality, Thulani Mbana

SASOLBURG – The Democratic Alliance (DA) is appalled by the sudden closure of the Sasolburg landfill site by the Metsimaholo Local Municipality without any prior notification to residents.

Upon inquiry, the political leadership, including the Executive Mayor, appeared unaware of the situation.

Only after persistent pressure from the DA did the municipality release a statement claiming the closure was temporary, yet it failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for the action.

This closure forces the Sasolburg community and surrounding areas to travel approximately 30km to the nearest landfill.

The DA has consistently demanded updates on the progress of acquiring a new landfill site.

While in government, the DA approved a budget of R5 million for the 2023/2024 fiscal year to acquire a new site, but no action has been taken since the removal of the DA mayor.

The landfill’s operating licence expired over a decade ago and despite the DA’s efforts to address this issue, resistance from major council parties has hindered progress.

Under the leadership of AIC Mayor Jack Malindi, this hazardous condition remains unaddressed.

Whenever the DA questions the Executive Mayor in the council, he promises to investigate but never provides answers.

The DA will continue to hold the executive accountable to ensure consistent and satisfactory service provision for the community.

Additionally, we will demand immediate action to expedite the establishment of a new, compliant landfill site. Failure to comply will result in continued public pressure to rectify this public health hazard.

The uninformed closure of the landfill site has created significant inconvenience and potential health risks for Sasolburg residents.

The DA’s proactive measures aim to mitigate these impacts and restore efficient waste management services.
