Together in death: Buddies gunned down in cold blood

Lehlohonolo Moorosi’s inconsolable mother told Ster how her son was never liked by the community that he was even accused of murder.

SEBOKENG. – When two close friends walked out of one of Polokong’s night spots over the weekend, little did the duo know that those last steps would take them towards their deaths.

After taking a few steps out of the tavern, Nqobile Dlamini (35) and Lehlohonolo Moorosi (39) encountered a hail of bullets from an alleged assassin, ending their lives and leaving the small community of Polokong, off the Golden Highway, reeling in shock.

A manhunt is now on for the alleged hitman, who is only described as a ‘dressed in a white hoodie’.

Police could not provide further descriptions of the alleged gunman who hit Dlamini with three gunshots, while his friend, Moorosi, allegedly took eight shots.

Ster spoke to the families of the deceased who shared sobbing stories of how they were called to the scene by neighbours only to find the worst of their fears were true.

Kgathatso Moorosi, mother to Lehlohonolo, who was a father of two teenagers and one toddler, said she last saw her son when he went out on Saturday evening.

“Lehlohonolo never came back after he left around 20:00. A neighbour came to report how Lehlohonolo was shot and killed, three streets away,” she said.

The heartbroken mother shared the horrific sight of how she found her son.

“They [deceased] faced in different directions as if they were running away during their shooting. All I remember seeing was blood oozing from their lifeless bodies,” she said.

While many speculations dominated social media, alleging that the duo terrorized the community, the grieving mother said conceded that her son was never the community’s favourite.

“We’ve heard stories all round about my son’s death. Speculations are being made and people whisper in their little corners. I know my son was never liked in our community. A year ago, there was another tavern shooting that claimed two kids from our community, he was accused and dragged by cops for those murders,” she said.

Kgathatso said her son was released from holding cells and the case was allegedly struck off the roll, pending evidence.

The Dlaminis, who were sitting outside their home warming up to the winter sun, when Ster visited, had a different story to tell about their late son.

Simon Dlamini, who seemed rather shaken by the incident said: “I found myself covered in a blanket after his sister called me to notify me about the ordeal. When I got to the scene, scores of neighbours had already gathered and watched as police removed his body.”

The distraught father said while they know nothing about the motive behind the murders, their wish was for justice to prevail for the father of two.

“My son was never a problematic son at home, he used to listen to me. We are left with open wounds and hope that his killer faces the might of the law,” he said.

Sedibeng Cluster police spokesperson, Captain Fikile Funda, confirmed the murder.

“Thirteen cartridges were found and one projectile and one live round were found on the scene. The suspect is unknown at this moment; however, investigations are underway,” he said.
