Memorial service for former Metsimaholo mayor Lindiwe Tshongwe

Scores of mourners described fallen politician as a giving and courageous woman.

SASOLBURG. – Immediate family members, friends, and colleagues paid their last respects to former Metsimaholo Local Municipality mayor Lindiwe Tshongwe during a moving memorial service.

Dressed in their different party regalia, scores filled the Nkgopoleng Secondary School Hall in Zamdela, Sasolburg on Thursday, May 30 to celebrate the political female giant’s life.

Tshongwe who was the MMC of Finance and Integrated Development Plan in the municipality, passed on May 21 following a long illness.

Comprising of the Congress of the South African Communist Party (SACP), Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), African National Congress and the Women’s League spoke highly of Tshongwe.

Speaking at the memorial, SACP District Secretary Paki Letsie said, “Comrade Lindiwe was a great believer besides being a politician. She was very professional and never left anything to chance. She was a model of a cadre the alliance wanted to see. Lindiwe was selfless, and went all out when given a task.”

Former colleague Mosiuoa Poho said “I knew Lindiwe from a distance and realised she was a very vocal woman in the labour department. In 2011 when I became a councillor, she was also a councillor. She never disappointed the ANC as a deployee. She worked with sheer honesty.”

Metsimaholo mayor, Jack Malindi said “I am a mayor today because of Comrade Lindiwe. She was a very dedicated person who stood for what she believed in. She was a very courageous person. The municipality has lost a gem.”

ANCWL Deputy Provincial Secretary Matsholo Mmolotsane said “It’s so painful to be gathered here and talk about Lindiwe. Let us not disappoint Lindi. Let’s continue with the vibrance she brought inside Women’s League.”

Tshongwe will rest on Saturday, June 01 at the Roman Catholic Church in Zamdela.
