‘Sharpeville Shooting’ Charity Games

"Most of us were not yet born but we understand the significance of this day because some of us lost our families and relatives."

SHARPEVILLE.- The Sharpeville Shooting (March 21) Charity Tournament kicked off at James Ground in Phelandaba on Sunday.

This tournament involves 16 local masters’ soccer teams with the finals scheduled to take place on March 24 at the same venue. The tournament also involved senior soccer teams which are set to kick off this coming weekend.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Themba Zwelibanzi who is one of the organisers said that apart from charity purposes, the tournament also forms part of the commemoration of Human Rights Day which will take place on March 21.

Zwelibanzi further said that all the participating teams are expected to contribute sanitary towels to be donated to the local schools after the tournament. The Sharpeville community came in numbers to spend the Sunday watching the games from the morning until the afternoon.

Zwelibanzi told Sedibeng Ster Sport that the tournament is meant to celebrate this significant day in the calendar of South African history when the Sharpeville people were killed in 1969 refusing to carry ‘Dompasses’.

“This charity tournament is not only about charity but also about looking back on what happened in 1969 right here in Sharpeville. As much as the tournament is for charity purposes it is also important to commemorate Human Rights Day.
