Sheep and cow slaughtered for Matrics

Amongst the intervention measures that the school came up with was for teachers to focus solely on pupils as individuals.

SEBOKENG. – A celebration fit for Kings and Queens was held at Sehopotso Secondary School in Zone 12, Sebokeng today, Friday.

A cow and a sheep were slaughtered for the community, teachers, and pupils to feast on in celebration of Sehopotso’s 2023 matric results. The school attained 83.8% overall in its 2023 matric results from 52.1% in 2022. Jubilation and excitement were written on the faces of everyone in attendance from parents, and teachers to the head of the school, Principal Ofentse Moloto.

Moloto, who was appointed principal last June could not hide his excitement over the astonishing results as he thanked everyone for their dedication and hard work. He thanked all those involved for a job well done, from the Department of Education, the teachers, the staff (admin, caretakers, groundsmen), the parents, the pupils, the School Management Team (SMT), the School Governing Body (SGB), and the Representative Committee of Learners (RCL).

The school choir entertained guests.

Before Moloto’s arrival, the school had been amongst those that had been underperforming in Sedibeng District West, along and below the 50% mark. Sehopotso caters mostly to children from the Kanana informal settlement, Zone 12, Evaton, and Small Farms areas.

Unfortunately, most, if not all of the matriculants could not make it due to it being the registration period at different higher learning institutions and there being a serious crisis about a shortage of spaces at these institutions. Some have had to relocate outside of Vaal to further their studies. However, representatives were sent to the event.

“We did what we had to do for us to do what we wanted to do (to achieve). I want to thank everybody involved, all the stakeholders for making the results of our hard work possible,” Moloto said.

Amongst the intervention measures that Moloto came up with was for teachers to focus solely on pupils as individuals and have study camps where pupils were given attention and taught throughout the night, and the results are here for everyone to see.

“We are extremely excited with the outcomes of the results, for a long time we had been a laughing stock but now Mr Moloto has put the school’s name amongst those that are the best in the region. As parents, we are going to make sure that we do not regress and find ourselves being in the situation that we had been in before.”

“We are going to keep to the ideas and models that the school principal has come up with for us to achieve these amazing results. We are 100% behind him and the children,” a parent said when asked about the celebrations.

The cow and a sheep were slaughtered by community members yesterday (Thursday) with the help of parents and the community at large, and today, everyone was invited for a feast in celebration of the class of 2023 which has certainly outdone itself.
