Teacher allegedly instructed pupil to drink own urine

Mother says her 13-year-old son in Grade 6 was allegedly instructed to drink his own urine by an educator.

SICELO. – The mother of a 13-year-old boy from Silahliwe in Sicelo is devastated following her son’s ordeal. According to the mother, her son, a grade 6 pupil at Sicelo Primary School in Meyerton, was allegedly forced to drink his own urine by a male educator at the school. The incident occurred in April 2023.

Speaking to Ster North, the mother expressed that her son’s life has never been the same following the incident.

“Back in April, I was alerted by children who attend the same school as my son about what happened. Later, I asked him about it and he disclosed that on the day, there was no teacher in the class, and other kids were able to go to the bathroom as they pleased.

“By the time he stood up to go to the bathroom, he met the teacher by the door, and the teacher told him to go and sit down. Feeling pressure, he asked the teacher multiple times if he could please go to the bathroom, and the teacher still refused.

“That is when my son resorted to relieving himself inside his juice bottle. When other kids saw him, they immediately alerted the teacher, and he instructed my son to drink the urine.

“He drank it, and when he couldn’t swallow, the teacher instructed him to go and spit it out.”

The mother reported the matter to the school principal the following day, who assured her that she would escalate the issue.

“A few days later, I received a call from the Department of Education, and they informed me they had received my complaint and were handling the matter. That was the last time I heard anything regarding the matter.”

The mother now states that her son has been profoundly affected by the ordeal. “He has changed so much. He is full of so much anger and always tells me that he hates going to school because he has to see the teacher. The experience has truly traumatised him and continues to do so.”

Gauteng Department of Education Spokesperson, Steve Mabona, said, “The GDE is aware of the unfortunate and serious allegations made against an educator at Sicelo Primary School. Officials were dispatched to the school to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. The educator was found guilty and sanctioned accordingly following investigations.

“Necessary psycho-social support was offered to the learner,” Mabona stated. However, upon speaking to the mother, she maintained that no form of counselling was ever offered to her son following the incident.
