Heavy rains leave families homeless

They were fortunate because their children were already on vacation.

BOIPATONG.- Heavy rains left the families homeless in Lusaka, Boipatong last Thursday night.

When Sedibeng Ster arrived at the scene the families were busy trying to remove the heavy trees that fell on top of their houses which damaged the roof and furniture and left family members injured. Four families’ houses were damaged by this heavy storm.

The most painful situation was one of the affected residents who lost a taxi when the heavy tree in the yard fell on top of it. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, the devastated taxi owner, Sylvester Sebalo said that, as always, he parked his taxi next to the big tree in the yard not knowing there would be a heavy storm on the same night.

He told Sedibeng Ster that the taxi was his livelihood and pleaded with the relevant authorities to help him.

“I don’t know how I will survive because this taxi put a meal on the table. Police came after this happened and they took the statement but they were more concerned about one of our neighbour who was injured. I don’t know what to do now because I was supposed to go to work this morning.”

Dieketseng Mosifa who is also a neighbour to Sebalo escaped death when she was injured.

“I stay with my daughter and when this happened we were trapped inside the house and I was injured on my right leg.”

Another family that was affected by this was the Khumalo’s with one of the family members, Elizabeth Khumalo being rushed to the hospital. She told Sedibeng Ster that they were fortunate because their children were already on vacation.

“I don’t know what could have happened if our children were here and I thank God because they were not here,” she said.

The other house that was affected by these heavy rains was that of the Mhlongo family, however, no one was injured despite the damaged roof and furniture. The families pleaded to Sedibeng Ster and the municipality for help to fix their houses.
