Who needs a grand car?

“Oh, just take a taxi”.

MEYERTON.– Every year, the competition surrounding matric farewells becomes increasingly extravagant.
From meticulously planned attire to the choice of transportation, everything is considered months in advance.

Notably, significant sums of money are spent to outdo one another, often by arriving in the most beautiful and expensive sports cars. Kimberley Styles, a student from Dr. Malan High School in Meyerton, observed this trend and listened attentively.

She noticed that some 12th graders felt excluded from attending the matric farewell simply because they believed they couldn’t arrive in their parents’ regular cars or vans. Amanda, Kimberley’s mother, recalls jokingly suggesting at the beginning of the year,
“Oh, just take a taxi”.

To her surprise, Kimberley later approached her and announced, “I’m going to arrive at the matric farewell in an old taxi”. Initially wanting to do something ‘grand’ for her daughter, Amanda found that Kimberley and Amanda’s partner, Hendrik, were already on a mission to find the right old taxi. They connected with Mr Mafiga, who ensured his taxi was in pristine condition for the special occasion.

“In the end, there were 10 of us in the taxi because Kimberley insisted that several of my friends who helped raise her should come along. When we arrived at the event, the surprise on her classmates’ faces was evident. However, we received a lot of positive feedback.”

After Kimberley shared her decision to arrive in an old taxi with her friends, along with her boyfriend, Jannes Fouche, they collectively decided that the grandeur of cars wasn’t as important. “So, she set an example, and everyone enjoyed the evening, regardless of how they arrived at the event,” Amanda noted. She further mentioned that she and her friends shed many tears of pride and joy on the way to the function.
