Bornservant NGO hosts 5km and 10km Fun Walk

"It is not a secret that when people meet it is because of alcohol or stokvel and that is why we decided to organise this visibility campaign."

SHARPEVILLE.- Bornserant, a non-profit organisation (NPO), hosted a 5km and 10km Awareness Fun Walk Against Substance Abuse in Putswastena, Sharpeville recently.

The members of the community and some of the local organisations came to support this initiative. Some of the organisations that supported this fun walk against substance abuse were Tshegetsanang, Second Chance Recovery, SANCA, and Standard Bank. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Mohumagadi Seisa who is a volunteer at Bornservant said the event went according to their plan even though the turnout from the community was not what they expected.

She told Sedibeng Ster Sport that Sharpeville is one of the areas that have a problem with alcohol abuse and this march was to address that. Seisa said as much as it was Fun Walk it was more about education.

“We wanted to use this Fun Walk to bring the Sharpeville community together because when we call the meeting they don’t show up. As Bornserant we are aware that alcohol is a big issue in our area and I’m happy because those who came went back home with a lot of information. We serve the community to help those with alcohol addiction to take them to rehab.

“It is not a secret that when people meet it is because of alcohol or stokvel and that is why we decided to organise this visibility campaign in the form of Fun Walk. Standard Bank was there to give people advice about saving and the different types of accounts they have, with Tshegetsang and Second Chance Recovery Center also there to educate people with HIV and Aids and taking blood pressure tests among other things. We are here to serve the community of Sharpeville,” said Seisa.

The Bornservant was founded by Kgomoco Mokejane who is the organisation’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) with the main aim of making a difference in the community.
