Vaal River City Marathon attracts 4 000 athletes

Apart from winning, this event promotes a healthy lifestyle.

VANDERBIJPARK.- The Vaal River City Marathon was a huge success with athletes from all over the country coming in big numbers to participate in this year’s marathon.

This annual marathon took place at Isak Steyl Stadium in Vanderbijlpark over the weekend.

This event was hosted by former SAFA President Dr Molefi Oliphant in conjunction with Arcelor Mittal with Rand Water as the main sponsor of the event. The day’s program started with a 5km Fun Run, followed by 10km, and 21km with the much anticipated 42km being last in the program.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Dr Oliphant hailed this year’s Vaal River City Marathon as a huge success that attracted more than 4,000 participants. Dr Oliphant said as a region we must be very proud to host such a significant event in the sports calendar. He said that this boosts the economy of Emfuleni with the event taking place within the Emfuleni area. Apart from winning, Oliphant said, this event promotes a healthy lifestyle.

“I want to thank everyone who made this Val River City Marathon a success especially the athletes for coming in numbers. I would also like to thank Rand Water for being the main sponsor of this event and Arcelor Mittal Athletics Club for being a hosting club. I must say, I’m really humbled to host this event in Vanderbijlpark growing up in Bophelong,” said Oliphant.

Oliphant also thanked the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) Executive Mayor Sipho Radebe for gracing the event and also supporting the event with municipality resources such as traffic officers.

He also thanked the Department of Sports, for the meaningful role they played in ensuring the event became a success.
