Lethabo power station’s recycling campaign ignites innovative change

Lethabo Power Stations' Environmental Department held a campaign focused on changing waste to beautiful designs.

  1. VANDERBIJLPARK – Lethabo Power Station’s Environmental Department composed a recycling awareness campaign that captivated both hearts and minds.

With sustainability at the forefront, this campaign showcased the power station’s dedication to responsible waste management and fostered a spirit of innovation and teamwork.

According to the Environmental Manager of the power utility, the focal point of the campaign was a competition that pitted four teams against each other, each challenged to craft ingenious creations from waste materials commonly generated at the power station.

The objective was twofold: to shed light on the importance of recycling and repurposing, and to encourage employees to think outside the box in their quest to protect the environment.

On Wednesday, August 16, scores of employees gathered at the power station’s recreational hall to showcase their products.

Different designs from garden chairs, and braai stands among other products were showcased in a hall packed to its knees.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Environmental Manager Melini Hariram said the aim of the campaign is to turn waste into beautiful creations.

“The campaign is all about finding out how can we change the mindset of our employees in terms of waste and we can make it innovative for the future as well to make different creations out of waste. Our main objective is not taking waste to landfill sites but putting it to a different era by making beautiful creations. The idea is to support environmental sustainability and ensuring a sustainable future for our forthcoming generation,” she said.

Giving her reaction to the success of the campaign, Hariram said she was overwhelmed.

“I am so proud, happy, and thrilled after witnessing what our employees have done. We had different presentations and each team placed their effort on delivering for the campaign. This made me realize that our people can make a difference, not only at work but at home as well,” she said.

Dino Kgoale from BT Projects under the electrical and maintenance department said “We are very excited about the win. We worked extremely hard and it took days to produce our craft. We worked took some time to plan, and come up with different and innovative ways of preserving our environment.”

“What stood out of our design from other teams is the idea of having a bulb to our design. If you look at all the other teams there was nothing technical,” she said.
