Sedibeng Ster journalist passionate about changing people’s lives

"I’m not doing this for popularity or fame; it is something rooted in my upbringing."

SEDIBENG.- Sedibeng Ster journalist, Zacharia Nale rolled up his sleeves to help the less fortunate when he recently donated brand new sneakers to the homeless and street vendors.

Nale is funding this initiative from his own pocket, as his family has always been passionate about changing people’s lives. He surprised the homeless and street vendors by giving them brand-new sneakers, recognising that some of them didn’t have proper shoes, especially during the cold weather. Accompanied by his daughter, he personally handed the shoes to those in need. However, Nale clarified to his colleagues in the newsroom that this act of kindness had nothing to do with Mandela’s Day; and that it was simply his way of giving back to those in need.

“I have also informed my boss, Mr Foord, that I do this using my own funds and sometimes seek assistance from relatives or friends. I’m not doing this for popularity or fame; it is something rooted in my upbringing. I had a decent upbringing and I want to continue doing good for others, just like my parents used to do. People think that only those with lots of money can help, but I disagree. If that were the case, we wouldn’t have such situations in our community where people go to bed on empty stomachs.”

Nale emphasised that to help people, one doesn’t have to be wealthy or have a lot of money, adding that his parents were not rich, yet they opened their home to strangers and extended relatives.

“This is not the first time I have done something like this. During the nationwide Covid-19 shutdown, I helped the elderly with food parcels and wheelchairs, with assistance from government institutions and the community. I feel great after doing this, and it brings peace to my soul when I go to bed.”

Nale expressed his desire to leave a legacy that people will remember him for. For years, he has been engaged in various charitable activities, including providing food parcels to ex-professional players and elderly individuals from the Evaton and Small Farm communities.

Affectionately known as “Zakes” in the newsroom, Nale shared with Sedibeng Ster that he is passionate about changing people’s lives, especially young individuals, and helping them achieve their dreams. He emphasised that as a journalist, it’s not just about writing stories but also making a positive impact in the community.
