With this campaign the fire message will reach people in townships and squatter camps.

SEDIBENG.- The Working on Fire Programme in conjunction with Midvaal Local Municipality’s Public Education, Information, and Relations launched the fire awareness campaign in Meyerton’s Sicelo Community Hall recently.

This was aimed at amplifying the fire awareness messages in communities.

Lerato Mokwena, the Community Fire Awareness Officer from the Working on Fire Programme said that every year people lose their lives as a result of fires, especially during winter fire season in South Africa. She said lives must be saved through fire awareness education.

‘‘Midvaal local municipality host one of the Working on Fire team in Vaal Marina. The team helps in spreading the fire awareness message in communities and schools. With this campaign the fire message will reach people in townships and squatter camps,’’ said Mokwena.

Mokwena said there are enough fuel loads across the province. She is anticipating a busy and dangerous fire season. Therefore, the fire safety message is important. Meanwhile, Mmathapelo Rantsie, a firefighter from Midvaal fire station presented the methods of mitigating the risks of fires and the role of the fire department in ensuring the public safety of the residents.

She said the residents need to work with the local authorities to ensure by laws are enforced.
