Farm school hosts Youth Month games

"Our challenge is the lack of sports fields and we must travel to Meyerton to play our school games and we have talented learners who are passionate about sports."

THREE RIVERS.- Six Sedibeng East District Schools participated in the Youth Month Tournament hosted by Rusoord Secondary School at the Dick Fourie Stadium on Saturday.

The school principal, Nomalanga Maduna hailed this youth month tournament as a great success. This tournament was graced by the Midvaal Local Municipality (MLM) Executive Mayor, Peter Teixeira who spent the whole day watching both soccer and netball games.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Maduna said that the tournament was part of celebrating youth with June being known as Youth Month. She told Sedibeng Ster Sport that as a school they intend to host this event annually.

To make it interesting, despite being a farm school from Meyerton the school produced a five-star performance with their netball team being crowned the tournament champions while their soccer team came second after playing a goalless draw against Lekoa Shandu Secondary School. The tournament was played in the point system.

Maduna said apart from celebrating youth month, the aim was also to keep these learners away from the street by keeping them busy through sports. She told Sedibeng Ster Sport that being a school from a farm, they don’t have a soccer field.

“As Rusoord Secondary School we want to thank Midvaal Municipality Mayor for his support and also donating soccer and netball kits for the tournament. As a school, we really feel honoured by his presence despite his busy schedule but he still has time to support this initiative. We want to thank all the sponsors who contributed to the success of this tournament,” said Maduna.

Some of the sponsors who contributed to the success of this youth month soccer and netball tournament were Fourways Spa which contributed R 500, Department Od Sports and Recreation donated trophies and medals and Jary Mann Estate contributed an amount of R5 000.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Teixeira said that as the municipality they support any event that keeps children busy. He was full of praise for the organiser for hosting such an initiative. He also took this opportunity to wish Netball South Africa all the best in their coming World Cup hosted in Cape Town.

Midvaal Local Municipality hosted the Netball World Cup Trophy Tour recently as part of a national tour.
