Netball World Cup Trophy hits Sedibeng soil

The local netball team captains were also called to take photos next to the trophy.

SEDIBENG.- Sedibeng was part of history when the Netball World Cup Trophy Tour visited this region to parade the world cup trophy this week.

The tour was a great success with the Sedibeng community coming in numbers to view and take photos next to this trophy. This trophy tour started in Meyerton with the main event held at Saul Tsotetsi Sports Complex in Zone 14, Sebokeng. The Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) Executive Mayor, Sipho Radebe welcomed the representative from Netball South Africa including Netball South Africa President, Cecilia Molokwane.

There was a hive of activities at the venue to welcome Netball World Cup Trophy Tour including mini netball world cup games with pantsula dancers entertaining the crowd. The day’s program started with the National Anthem.

It was a great experience for the Sedibeng community, young and old as they had the opportunity to view and took photos next to the World Cup Trophy.

Some of the notable names that graced this event include the local political leaders, and sports administrators, such as Fakazile Nkitseng (Sedibeng Netball Federation President), Dudu Msanse (former Sedibeng Netball President), Jabu Mqcina (Enfuleni Local Football Association Chairman). Ben Manzi (Emfuleni Sports and Reaction), Dikeledi Tsotetsi (Former Emfuleni Local Municipality Mayor). To make it interesting, Saul Tsotetsi Sports Complex is named after her (Dikeledi Tsotetsi)’s husband.

However, Tsotetsi had to made to wait at the gate as the security personnel denied her entrance at the VIP gate. Sedibeng Ster tried to interview but with no success until Mariam Power from Emfuleni Local Municipality Sports Department intervened.

When addressing the crowd that came to view the trophy, ELM Mayor wished Netball South Africa all the best and he was convinced that the trophy will remain in South Africa.

“I have no doubt that the trophy will remain in South Africa at the end of the world cup. As Emfuleni Local Municipality we will rally behind the Netball South Africa team. It is a great honour to host the Netball World Cup trophy in Emfuleni,” he said.

Netball South Africa President Molokwane was also full of confidence that the trophy will remain in South Africa.

The World Cup is scheduled to take place in Cape Town from 28 July – 6 August.
