Cable theft worsens Refengkgotso’s water woes

"The infrastructure theft sets back the municipality over hundreds of thousands of rands whenever these occurrences take place, and these funds could have been utilized in bringing better services to the people of Metsimaholo," says Mayor Zwane, on cable theft.

DENEYSVILLE – Refengkgotso water crisis is worsening following continued cable theft in the area.

According to Metsimaholo Local Municipality, it has been almost a month since the Municipality commenced work toward resolving the water crisis in the area.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, May 23, municipal spokesperson Dr. Gino Gilberts said their officials are working around the clock to provide residents with clean consumable water.

“Both reservoirs in the area have been cleaned and the sludge has been removed. The municipality is refurbishing old electrical and mechanical components. This process will improve the supply and flow of the water,” he said.

Alberts added that the Mbeki area is the only affected area at the moment and is without water.

“Cable theft has impacted the full restoration of the water supply. A water tanker is in the area to supply water. In no time the entire area of Refengkgotso will have water. Plans are in place to curb future water disruptions and the Municipality has looked at various interventions that will avoid water disruptions and end the crisis,” he added.

Executive Mayor, Jeff Zwane has since appealed to all the residents of Metsimaholo to assist the municipality and fight against destroying the infrastructure.

“The extended water crisis period could have been avoided should the cables not have been stolen. The infrastructure theft sets back the municipality over hundreds of thousands of rands whenever these occurrences take place, and these funds could have been utilized in bringing better services to the people of Metsimaholo,” said Zwane.
