Eskom subcontractor murdered at Lethabo power station

Free State police are appealing for help catching suspects linked to the murder of an Eskom subcontractor who was gunned down on Sunday, May 7, at Lethabo Power Station.

VILJOENSDRIF – A 48-year-old man was shot and killed at Eskom’s Lethabo Power Station parking lot on Sunday, May 7.

Siyabulela Nkwelo, an Eskom subcontractor was shot at point blank by an unknown suspect when he was on his way to his vehicle.

After the shooting, the suspect fled the scene with a Polo VW packed with four African men.

According to Free State Police spokeswoman Sergeant Josephine Rani, their members received a complaint of a shooting incident at about 17;45 on Sunday.

“On Sunday, 7 May 2023 at about 17:45, the police received a complaint of a shooting incident at Lethabo Power Station. On arrival at the scene, the police found a man, identified as Mr Siyabulela Nkwelo (48), lying on the ground facing down and the emergency services declared him dead. He was a sub-contractor at the power station,” she said.

Rani further added that “It is alleged that the deceased had just knocked off duty and walked to his vehicle. Suddenly the co-workers heard several gunshots, and immediately after the shooting, they noticed an African male getting inside a white polo with Mpumalanga registration number plates and driving off with four unknown male occupants,” she said.

“Anyone with information regarding the shooting must contact Detective Sergeant Tauru Majoe on 071 094 057048,” said Rani.
