SEBOKENG – Thousands of car-spinning fanatics braved the scorching sun as they gathered at the KwaMasiza stadium in Sebokeng on Sunday afternoon, April 30, to watch an action galore Vaal spin festival.
Revving engines, screeching and blasting tires, and cheering crowds were some of the activities that took place at the much-anticipated drifting event.
Several nationally popular spinning moguls graced the event organized by Lefa ‘Lentja’ Motloung, who is also a popular and enthusiastic drift king.
Taking turns to show off their drifting skills, different petrolheads used different vehicles to entertain the crowd.
From the popular 325i, known as iGusheshe, BMW five series referred to as iS’jangalala to drifting with the latest BMW M4 models, this is what turned the crowds to running amok.
The spin fest was the talk of the town and drew crowds from as far as Bloemfontein, just to watch.
While many chilled with their soft, cold drinks in cooler boxes, sun hats, and makeshift tents with sound systems were the order of the day.
Different crews erected gazebos at the dilapidated soccer field as workshop stations, with their best drivers kicking the accelerator a stone’s throw away to the concrete portion used as a stoop for drifting.
Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Businessman, spinner, and event organizer Lefa ‘Lentja’ Motloung explained why he continues to organize the spin festival.
“I have always loved spinning and attended many failed events. I always asked myself ‘What is it I can do better’ in order to change the game? I then challenged myself and organized the first Vaal spin festival. I didn’t focus on many things, I focused on Marketing the event and when it was a success, I never stopped,” he said.
Lentja said the first spin fest was in 2013, hosted at a plane strip.
“The venue was very small and searched for a much bigger space to grow this concept. We were having a photo shoot in preparation for one of my events, when we roamed around seeking dilapidated buildings, we ended up at Masiza and All I saw was a perfect home for Vaal spin festival,” he said.
Having found the perfect spot, Lentja said he then introduce the sport by hosting Sunday sessions which grew to draw thousands each time the annual festival is hosted.
“It still gives me butterflies to see this event being packed by thousands of people just to support this extreme sport. Today is super full and leaves me very happy and proud to continue to organize such,” he said.
