EVATON – Three armed robbery suspects, aged between 30 and 32, were arrested in Evaton on Monday, April 24.
This after a group of about five suspects travelling in a Toyota Quatum had a shootout with police following a robbery in the area.
According to Gauteng Provincial police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo two more fled from the scene.
“Three suspects were arrested and two fled the scene after they had robbed people and were involved in a shootout with the police on Monday, 24 April 2023, at approximately 10h30. Police recovered one of the firearms that were used by the suspects during the robbery,” he said.
Masondo further added that “Police officers from Orange Farms Police Station were conducting routine crime prevention patrols when they received information about people that were driving in a white Quantum minibus and robbing people in the area.
“Police went searching for the suspects and spotted the minibus that matched the description. Upon stopping the car, the suspects sped off and a high-speed chase ensued, which led to a shootout,” he said.
Masondo said the victim’s car was cornered in Palm Springs and three suspects were arrested while two of them fled on foot. Police recovered one firearm and impounded the minibus.
“A police officer was injured during the shootout and taken to the nearest medical care center for treatment.
The arrested suspects are facing charges of armed robbery, attempted murder, and possession of an unlicensed firearm, amongst other crimes. They are expected to appear before Sebokeng Magistrate Court in due course,” he said.
