Tribal war leaves a man murdered, shacks, and a car torched

A Xhosa man was hacked to death in the early hours of Sunday morning in Khayalethu, Boipatong. Following his murder, several shacks were torched and a car were torched by angry mob in search of Lesotho nationals suspects during a manhunt.

BOIPATONG – A tribal war has left a Xhosa-speaking man hacked to death, while a car and several shacks belonging to Lesotho nationals set alight.

The chaotic and dramatic scenes played in the early morning of Sunday, April 16, in Khayalethu Section, Boipatong, where the murder unfolded after a night of a boozing spree.

Following the killing of a 37-year-old, a group of Xhosa’s speaking men went on a manhunt, searching for four perpetrators who killed the man.

Failing to find the suspected Quadro that killed the 37-year-old, one was then found by the group, after pouring him with petrol and procrastinating on burning him, cops summoned to the scene, saved him.

His car and shack were burnt in the act, as if this was never enough, another Lesotho national was traced and his shack was also left burnt.

In a statement, police spokeswoman Sergeant Thembeka Maxambela said cops were summoned to the murder scene in Khayalethu Sector 1 around 02:00 am on 16 April 2023.

“Four suspects have been identified by police, two of the four were detained for the murder of 37-year-old male. Suspects are Lesotho nationals,” she said.

“A group of majority Xhosa speaking people went around in Khayalethu Section in Boipatong where the murder took place and got hold of the victim, poured petrol over his body attempting to burn him because he’s alleged to be a friend to one of the suspects who’s still not yet been arrested. The vehicle and shack belonging to the suspect was burnt to ashes,” she added.

Maxambela said a mob of Xhosa speaking went to sought another Sotho speaking victim who ran away and his shack was also burnt to ashes.

“Public Order Policing and Sedibeng District teams were mobilized and have managed to bring stability to the area and will remain in the area to monitor the situation further,” she said.
