Emfuleni Local Municipality has in a statement revealed that a municipality wide streetlight roll-out programme is underway, saying that the project is currently being carried being carried out in high priority streets at Vanderbijlpark, Three Rivers, Vereeniging, and Sharpeville.
The project aimed at ensuring that 24 000 street lights in Emfuleni are functioning properly, forms part of the municipality’s drive to provide residents with improved lighting and safe roads.
The announcement was made by the Municipal Manager April Ntuli.
ELM says it has appointed 15 contractors who started work to repair and maintain streetlights in November 2022.
“As part of the project, the contractors will utilize the allocated budget of R10 million to plant poles, replace cables, fittings, and globes. Contractors are further expected to rewire vandalized poles and close inspection holes as part of the job scope.
“With the public lighting budget of R10 million for the 2022/2023 financial year, the project will be completed in November 2024. The Electricity Department will be sourcing more funding to repair all streetlights in the coming 3 years.”
Commenting on the project, Ntuli states that he is happy with the progress made on the municipality’s major road network.
Ntuli thanked the private sector for partnering with the municipality in accelerating service delivery.
“We must also take this opportunity to appreciate our progressive partnership with the local private sector in enhancing service delivery. We continue to look forward to partnerships such as these, we are humbled by the support we get from ArcelorMittal and many other companies to advance to a better Emfuleni,” Ntuli concludes.
