Police uncover multi-million rand counterfeit goods operation in Eikenhof

A bribery charge was added after a duo suspected to be running a multi-million rand counterfeit goods operation in Eikenhof offered officers R30 000.

EIKENHOF. – Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) together with the K9 Unit has uncovered a multi-million rand counterfeit goods operation in Eikenhof.

The police were led to a plot in Eikenhoff following the arrest of two suspects aged between 54 and 55, after they were found to have counterfeit goods on Wednesday morning, 29 March.

The JMPD officers together with the K9 Unit were conducting crime prevention patrols when they stopped a white Toyota Quantum Panel Van along Swartkoppies Road and R82 (Vereeniging Road) in Kibler Park.

JMPD spokesperson, Xolani Fihla reports officers searched the vehicle and discovered clothing items (headwear) suspected to be counterfeit.

Fihla adds that the driver was requested to produce receipts for the items in his possession,but failed to do so.

“He was questioned by the officers on how he acquired the items, and he led them to a plot in Eikenhof. Upon arrival at the plot, additional suspected counterfeit goods, which included branded caps, hats, and beanies were recovered. Three embroidery machines were also recovered on the premises.

Fihla states that the alleged owner of the premises was summoned and on arrival told the police that he was renting the plot and overseeing activities being conducted on the premises.

“SAPS, Customs from SARS, and Brand Protectors were called to verify the items and to process the scene. The alleged kingpin attempted to bribe officers with R30 000 to get himself and his accomplice released after being apprehended,” he said.

“The duo, a Chinese and Zimbabwean national who both have South African citizenship were arrested and detained at Mondeor SAPS. The counterfeit goods and the embroidery machines with a combined estimated value of R 3 075 000 were seized.”

The two were charged with the contravention of the Customs and Excise Act, Contravention of the Counterfeit Goods Act, and Bribery.
