Nomvula Chenene’s killer set to appear in Vereeniging Magistrate’s court

The man behind the killing of former Bafana Bafana player Bennett Chenene’s sister, Nomvula is set to appear at Vereeniging Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, March 28.

VEREENIGING – The suspect’s arrest was activated following the whistle-blowing by his lover over the weekend.

According to police, the man’s girlfriend approached Meyerton police station and exposed her partner about a killed woman buried under their [couple’s] bed.

Police went to the man’s house where they found a grave under the bed, and upon further digging, they discovered more remains belonging to Chenene.

The remains are to be processed through DNA testing; however, the former Orlando Pirates Midfielder and immediate family members said they are convinced the remains found are that of Nomvula.

The slain Chenene who is lesbian, has been missing since December 10, last year when she was last seen by friends after they left a local tavern in their area.

Dozens of organizations including Community Safety Gender-Based Violence Brigades, and LGBTI groups among many others, have gathered outside the courthouse singing and chanting amid the much-anticipated brief appearance of the 36-year-old suspect.

Uhuru Mbele, a Sexual Gender Based Violence and Femicide/ African feminist from Tosunga Baninga based in Orange Farm said “I am at this court today because am drained by the violence perpetrated in our bodies, how many more women should be killed. Being a lesbian is not a crime”.

Uhuru further added that “I need to see him not getting bail and being given a harsher sentence. I need to see the justice system doing the right thing”.

Black Radical Feminist Activist, Nox Mtshali from Vaal LGBTI said “I am here because of the work we do in the organization; we stand for the rights and visibility of Lgbti people within the Vaal triangle and ultimately the broader spectrum. We believe in change through activism, education and cohesion. We have been involved in the case from when Nomvula Chenene got missing on the 10 December 2022, we organized the search and now we here”.
