Citizens embark on a real operation Vala Zonke

With bad-conditioned major roads in the Sedibeng alleged to be the cause of tire blasts, leading to major accidents, a duo of local Businessmen has embarked on a pothole patching spree.

SEBOKENG – Taheer Theletsane and George Mollo said they decided to conduct a real #ValaZonke since the government is failing motorists and Emfuleni residents as a whole.

On Tuesday, March 14, the couple flanked by some community members, filled giant potholes with crashed half-cast bricks, cement, and river sand donated by local hardware.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, The Vaal Chairperson of Ahanang, Theletsane said “We feel it’s high time we take action, and do things in exclusion of the government. We decided to patch potholes in one of the biggest arterial roads in the region, Moshoeshoe Road and we don’t know where we going to end”.

“We have committed ourselves to make sure that we close potholes where we can. Any good Samaritans who feel the need to keep their communities tidied like we are doing, can join the movement,” he said.

On the other hand, Mollo urged residents to stop waiting for the government and take initiative in improving their communities.

“As local gents ‘people’ we can’t wait for the government to make changes for us. I believe I am one of the people who continue struggling with blasted tires due to these potholes, so I can’t wait for the government to patch these costing potholes,” he said.

“When the government has decided to work for the people, they will findus already working. Built It has given us bags of cement, and some local hardware gave us half-cast bricks. We crash them to make a strong foundation so these pothole patches can last long,” he added.

Mollo added that “We’ve seen kids getting injured recently when their taxi capsized due to potholes. Moshoeshoe is a main road and it can’t look the way it does, otherwise, kids and other motorists will continue to collide and capsize,” he said.

Emfuleni Local Municipality spokesman Makhosonke Sangweni said closing potholes with such material is as good as vandalism.

“We had a meeting today following councilors protest where the issue of roads was raised and the Municipal Manager has highlighted that proper material to close roads is available. The only problem we having is fleet related, however, we are working on resolving it, and as soon the matter is sorted, teams will be dispatched to close those roads”.
