AACUM protest over potholes

A small group of Active African Christians United Movement (AACUM) members embarked on a march over potholes.

VANDERBIJLPARK – Carrying placards, dozens of demonstrators marched on Frikkie Meyer Road to Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) headquarters to hand over their memorandum of grievances of Wednesday, March 9.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Activist Don Sidiya Sedibeng Convener for ACCUM said they raised their dissatisfaction with the municipality pertaining to road conditions.

“There was a campaign called Vala Zonke that was launched by the then Minister of Transport Fikile Mbalula and was allocated budget from Treasury to make sure that roads are tied and potholes are patched but we haven’t seen change since the launch,” he said.

“We want the municipality to disclose the budget that was allocated from the campaign, we want all the names responsible for the tenders awarded for the closure of potholes to be announced on the public notice board and lastly we want to know the timeline for the projects because a tender has a start date and end date,” he said.

Sidiya said they gave the municipality seven days to respond to their memorandum.

“Should the municipality fail to make the disclosures, we are going to integrate the demonstration and bring on board taxi drivers, motorists and all road users to join our campaign and we going to make sure that drivers remove the disc on their cars as a manner to raise our dissatisfaction. We know all fines, tickets, licenses, those monies need to go to the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure for the maintenance of roads but that doesn’t happen in this municipality,” he said.
