Stand-off between meter taxi operators and e-hailing services

Police had to disperse protesters using rubber bullets following a clash between e-hailing and meter-taxi operators.

VEREENIGING. – The South African Police Service (SAPS) together with the Gauteng Traffic Police had to intervene following a clash between mater taxi operators and e-hailing services.

The clash  was prompted by a march by e-hailing services to the Sedibeng SAPS Cluster to handover a memorandum of grievances.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Abraham Mokate the Chairperson for e-hailing services in Sedibeng said they did not anticipate to meet with meter taxi operators today.

“Ours was to handover our memorandum to the SAPS and leave. We did not plan on meeting with meter taxi operators.”

Speaking about their grievances, Mokate said they had a problem with the investigation of their cases by the SAPS.

He said that e-hailing drivers are being terrorized by meter taxi drivers with no action from the police.

Sedibeng Taxi Patrollers Chairperson Papa Nkomuyadla has since called for the government’s intervention in the matter.

” The problem is that meter taxis are disadvantaged because they have routes they are required to travel while e-hailing services travel everywhere. There’s also the big price differences between the two services. It will be better if the government intervenes.”

The memorandum from e-hailing services was received by Colonel Jacob Landman from Sedibeng District SAPS.

Landman said the SAPS would respond in due course.
