MLM condemns influx of household waste at transfer stations

MLM attributes the influx to Emfuleni Local Municipality’s (ELM) challenges in collecting waste in various areas.

MEYERTON. – Midvaal Local Municipality (MLM) MMC for Community Services, Thembi Modiba says the municipality has noticed an inflow of household waste at MLM transfer stations.

“We have noticed an influx of people making use of MLM transfer stations. The Galloway, Blackwood and Kliprivier transfer stations only allow for the dumping of garden waste. Household refuse should be taken to the landfill site located in Henley on Klip,” Modiba said.

MLM encourages the use of the correct location when discarding household waste.

“We discourage illegal dumping as it is harmful to the environment and the beauty of the area.”

MLM attributes the influx to Emfuleni Local Municipality’s (ELM) challenges in collecting waste in various areas.

Speaking to Sedibeg Ster recently, Executive Mayor Sipho Radebe blamed the service delivery challenges in Emfuleni  on recent attachments of accounts by Eskom.

“Waste is a serious concern in our municipality, however as the municipality we lost seven weeks of service delivery due to the attachments by Eskom. That on its own, gave us a negative impact on refuse collection,” Radebe said.

Radebe said it is a serious concern that last year ELM started improving capacity to collect adding that Eskom’s attachment of movable assets was a major setback.
