SAFA appoints former Bafana Bafana Captain as scout

He was the youngest player in the Bafana Bafana team that participated at the 1998 African Cup Of Nation hosted by Burkina Faso.

SEDIBENG. – As Sedibeng Ster Sport predicted, SAFA has appointed former Bafana Bafana Captain, Aaron “Mbazo” Mokoena with a task to scout talent abroad.

Mokoena will serve as an assistant to another former Bafana Bafana star, David “Going Up Nyathi who wasi was appointed by SAFA as Chief Scout for Bafana Bafana. However, Mokoena’s appointment was under scrutiny with some believing that he was rewarded by SAFA President, Danny Jordaan for his loyalty and support prior to SAFA elections where he was selected to run this bankrupt organisation (SAFA) for another four years.

Despite criticism, Mokoena is one of the few former players who went through SAFA development structures playing for junior national teams before he graduated to Bafana Bafana. To add a feather on his cap, Mokoena is the most capped former Bafana Bafana player after becoming the youngest player to be selected for Bafana Bafana in 1998.

As if this is not enough, he was the captain when South Africa hosted the FIFA 2010 World Cup. Mokoena rose to stardom when he joined Ajax Amsterdam in Netherlands from Jomo Cosmos. Mbazo, as he is affectionately known in the South African football, was spotted by Jomo Jomo as an amateur player for the now defunct Boipatong Real Rangers. He spent his entire football career playing abroad and when he came back home, he had a short stint with Wits.
