Vaal 21 Foundation unveils Zone 7 Massacre Memorial

The unveiling took place next to Masenkeng in Zone 7 in an open park where the memorial site was unveiled in remembrance of those who were killed  that night.

SEBOKENG.- After hosting a successful Family Fun Day on 1 January, the Vaal 21 Foundation has done it once again.


The memorial project was initiated by the selfless businesses men , Khotso Poletsi, Lawrence Khekhe and George Mollo (Vaal 21 Foundation). The group of ambitious businessmen took it upon themselves to unveil the memorial site for the victims of the Zone 7 Massacre. This unveiling formed part of the commemoration of Zone 7 Massacre, Nangalambe Massacre which happened on the day 12 January in 1991.

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the massacre – the Sebokeng Zone 7 Massacre – in which more than 30 people lost their lives and 40 more were injured. On the night of January 12 1991, a peaceful night vigil was being held in an overcrowded tent to mourn the loss of community leader and ANC member Christopher Nangalembe.

Nangalembe had been captured and murdered a week earlier, after his body was discovered in a nearby rubbish dump. As mourners prayed peacefully, a group of unknown assailants suddenly stormed the tent, and without warning began firing random rounds of live ammunition into the crowd.

The event was attended by the who’s  who in politics and the Sedibeng District Municipality (SDM) Executive Mayor, Lerato Maloka  was the main speaker. The Vaal 21 Foundation will host a Gala Dinner for elderly people in March as part of their on going community projects.


The trio hailed this initiative as the biggest breakthrough to start the year. Maloka was full of praise for these ambitious individuals for their effort. She said that as the Sedibeng District Municipality they will always supports such initiatives in the community.
