Murdered over empty beer bottles

A squabble over empty beer bottles at a tavern in Drieziek, Orange Farm left two siblings stabbed, with one loosing his life and another surviving the attack.

ORANGE FARM – The incident happened on the 16, December, 2022 in the early hours of the morning when Fana Shabangu was apparently stabbed by his neighbour when he stood up for his brother Banele.

According to the family Spokesperson, Sphiwe Shabangu (32) she received a call on Friday around 03:30 am instructing her to get outside.

“A car was at my gate in extension 2 to fetch me. The people who fetched me told me that my brother Fana was stabbed to death and another, Banele, was admitted (to the hospital),” she said.

Banele (22) who survived the attack said his brother’s killer targeted him.

“I work at the tavern where the incident happened. Before my brother was killed, our neighbour fought me for picking up bottles. When I asked him why he was doing what he did, he asked me what I will do to him? He continued to poke me and a fight broke out. My brother stood up for me and he was stabbed. When our neighbour and his friend overpowered him, he went home to get a spade. He chased them, they overpowered him and took the spade. They then proceeded to stab him. I tried to stop them and they stabbed me as well,” he said.

Ntombifuthi Shabangu (49), a mother to deceased said that she was woken up by a rough knock on her door.

“When I opened the door, Banele told me Fana was stabbed and I must go see. When I got to the scene, my son’s killer was running together with his accomplice. My son lied dead in a pool of blood. All we want is justice to be served. My son didn’t deserve to die like an animal,” she said.

Sedibeng Police Spokeswoman, Sergeant Gertrude Makhale said that a case of attempted murder and murder was opened at Orange Farm SAPS.

“Orange Farm SAPS is investigating a murder and attempted murder case, where an 18 year’s old suspect was handed over to the Police. Police are still to arrest more suspects on this case,” she said.
