SEDIBENG.- This one day soccer spectacular saw four DStv Premiership teams, Amazulu, Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates pitted against each other. In the first semi-final, Sundowns made their intentions clear on how much they want this friendly soccer tournament trophy by beating Amazulu 3-0 to reach the final, while Orlando Pirates beat Kaizer Chiefs 6-5 on penalties to face Sundowns in the final.
However, no one saw it coming as Mamelodi Sundowns hammered the much talked about Pirates 4-0 in this one sided final played at the same venue. Sundowns was all over Pirates and turned this much anticipated final into a practice match, toying with Pirates for the better part of the game with Pirates offering no resistance.
Too much was expected from this encounter, after Orlando Pirates’ much talked about 3-0 win to Sundowns in a recent MTN8 Cup Semi-final. Orlando Pirates came into this game with their tails high but left the FNB Stadium with their tails between their legs. Mamelodi Sundowns was a better team on the day winning both of their games against Amazulu and Orlando Pirates convincingly, and scoring a total of seven goals in those two games.
The local soccer fans who packed the FNB Stadium to capacity enjoyed each an every moment of action. The local soccer fans also witnessed new players in the field from Sundows and and Kaizer Chiefs, who were given the opportunity to shine on the day. The youngsters never disappointed as they put a brave performance coming in as substitutes.
Meanwhile, the final game was not short of drama especially when Mamelodi Sundowns Head Coach Rhulani Mokwena and Orlando Pirates striker Kermit Erasmus exchanged heated words on the bench after a carreer threatening tackle by Pirates’ defender, Thapelo Xoki.
