Tlholo Primary School conquers literacy quiz competition

Tlholo Primary School has come out top during a Phendula Literacy Quiz competition recently.

SEBOKENG – The school was competing among several schools including Chief Bambatha Itsebeng, Makapane and Seeiso at Sedibeng West district offices in Sebokeng.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Mojalefa Mofokeng, an English and EMS educator at the school said the experience was a learning curve for his pupils.

“It’s about encouraging or to spark reading interest an early age. It also aimed at building learners’ vocabulary when coming to English, more especially learners from township schools,” he said.

Expressing his jubilation, Mofokeng said he feels as gland as a punch

“It was our first time competing in this competition so I was not quite expecting to win as we were already competing with schools who had experience. We went there in hoping to gain experience not knowing that we will win, I was quite amazed by these six learners,” he added.

Speaking on what Mofokeng and his pupil did different, the enthusiastic teacher said learners rotated books in order to be able to sum them up differently.

“All my learners took turns in reading books. For each week, we will have a certain book to read, then exchanged for the following week. In other schools, one learner focused on a single book, so their answers were contingent on one learner for that book, whereas for us they could discuss the answer and reach an agreement,” he said.
