Police bust zama zamas in De Deur!

Sedibeng District Cluster police stopped an illegal mining operation in De Deur on Monday.

DE DEUR – The police pounced on a number Zama Zamas at Doornkuil Plots following an intelligent driven operation consisting of several units inclusive of Gauteng Flying Squad Unit, Crime Intelligence Unit and Crime Prevention.

When the police arrived on the scene, suspects tried to evade the police, however the area was already on lock down.

Items seized by police during a sting operation in De Deur.

The suspects between 16-years of age and 39 were arrested and their mining equipment.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Sedibeng Police Spokeswoman Sergeant Gertrude Makhale said “on the arrival of the Police, at the mentioned area where illegal mining is being done, suspects fled to different directions unaware that Police already cordoned the area. All 05 suspects were arrested at the plot”.

Makhale said when suspects where interviewed, it was discovered that they are foreign nationals.

Following the arrest, the Sedibeng District Commissioner, Major General Zodwa Molefe commended team work from the various units/

She also commended the community for good partnership with the police and information about illegal activities within their areas.

The arrested suspects will appear in Vereeniging Magistrate Court soon.
