Heineken Sedibeng Brewery launches massive solar plant in Midvaal

The project supports Heineken’s ‘Brewing a Better World’ goal reach to net zero status in all its production sites by 2030

KLIPRIVIER. – Heineken Sedibeng Brewery has kept a promise it once made at the Presidential Investment Summit in 2019 after launching the biggest solar plant in Sedibeng recently. The launch was held at their plant situated in Kliprivie, Midvaal Local Municipality.

The Solar Plant project came as a result of Heineken’s collaboration with Sola and has over the past months created over 127 jobs, with 100 positions filled by people from Midvaal Local Municipality (MLM) and surrounding areas in Sedibeng.

Heineken’s engineering, strategic projects and sustainability manager Richard Kriel says the project supports Heineken’s ‘Brewing a Better World’ goal reach to net zero status in all its production sites by 2030.

“It is the latest move made by the company, on its journey towards more sustainable brewing. The newly-installed solar plant follows a water reclamation plant unveiled at the same facility earlier this year.”

The plant boasts about 14000 solar panels making it the largest Solar Plant in the Sedibeng region. The panels automatically change position to face the sun throughout the whole day. The generation capacity for this plant alone is 6,5 megawatts.

Dom Wills, Sola CEO said Sola is proud to be associated with Heineken and their commitment to procuring clean, low-carbon energy.

Speaking during the launch, MLM Mayor Peter Teixeira said he was excited about the project which yielded job opportunities for the people of Midvaal and Sedibeng District respectively.

“Heineken plays a significant role in Midvaal, this innovative step they’ve taken to secure energy will ensure that people’s jobs are safe and they continue to grow opportunities in Midvaal.

Heineken said that 30% of their electricity would be generated from the Solar Plant.
