Bringing communities closer with the law

Emfuleni Local Municipality leadership together with South African Police Services (SAPS), Firefighters and traffic officers marched against crime on Wednesday.

SEBOKENG – The march was conducted by the office of Public Safety as a manner to create a conducive working relationship between communities and law enforcers.

Starting from Zone 3, the march ended in Qedilizwe Secondary School, where soccer games which formed part of the programme were held.

According Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) in the department of Public Safety Ndade Mokoena, the gap between residents and different law enforcement agencies worries his department.

To create a good working relationship in combating crime, Mokoena’s office found it fit to create a crime awareness campaign through marching.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Mokoena said “When I held office in my department, I realized that our residents don’t have confidence with law enforcers. Whatever happening pertaining crime, we need our communities to support us. If the community is distant from us then we can never win the war with crime hence we decided to be close with the people we serve,” he said.

The march later turned into a mini tournament where cops, traffic officials and fire department competed for a sports kit.

“Whichever team win the sports kit that we are given by donors, the team will have to choose any sporting club of their choice to donate for,” he added.

Municipality Mayor Sipho Radebe who were amongst scores of marchers who graced the march and games held at Qedilizwe Secondary School said they are tired of crime.

Explaining his involvement, Radebe said “I’m here to support the sports against crime programme organized by one of our departments. I saw it befitting to be here to help create a working relationship with our communities”.

“We are here to send a strong message to committers of crime to say we are tired of crime,” he said.
