The South African Police Services (SAPS) in Meyerton recently embarked on a drug door to door campaign.

MEYERTON –Working together with different organizations such as members of the Crime Policing Forum, Youth Crime Prevention, Alpha trauma center, Midvaal Local Municipality, South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (SANCA), the teams visited Sicelo settlement to educate and send a clear message on drug dangers.

According to police spokeswoman Constable Tlaleng Moloi, the awareness campaign dubbed holekane ka dithethefatsi’ was aimed at gathering information pertaining drugs related issues in the community.

“The campaign also aims to educate the community about the dangers and the consequences of abusing drugs,” she said.

Moloi said the awareness campaign started with a short march from Sicelo Flats in Ward 10 to Sicelo white house in Ward 8 where a briefing took place.

“Community members welcomed us as we knocked at their houses, interacted well with us and they also provided us with more information that will help us on our intervention. More than 500 questionnaires were completed, and more than 600 educational pamphlets were distributed,” she said.

The programme further covered areas such as Sicelo extension 4, extension 5 and Kuvukiland.

Thabo Mokoena (28) a resident in the area said the campaign is the start of an important action by the police in helping young and old people on the growing problem.

“Our area is faced with a serious problem of drug abuse. We see young and old people getting hooked to these drugs. This educational drug campaign by the different organizations means a lot for our community,” he said.
