Bags of hope for abused women

Last week, the Vereeniging SAPS Women’s Network concluded Women’s Month with a bang when they collected and handed over 150 bags to the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit.

VEREENIGING. – The Women’s Network was formed by women from various departments within the SAPS in Vereeniging.

The bags, filled with toiletry and essentials for girls and women, will assist victims in need when they come to the unit for help.

Speaking during the event, Vereeniging Station Commander Brigadier Sibongile Ndaba thanked everyone for making the project a success. Ndaba encouraged women to support each other instead of gossiping about one another.

“This bag serves as a symbol of women picking another woman up and saying we are here for you.”

Ndaba acknowledged that women go through a lot on a daily basis. She urged them to take time out for some selfcare and to get their heads in the right space.

“Even five minutes in the bathroom can help you. Sometimes you just need to be by yourself in order to get your head right.”

Captain Dimakatso Rapulana said that the objective of forming the women’s network was to provide assistance to those in need. In the near future, Rapulana expects to extend the facility and adopt a home, which they will support through various projects. Some of the bags will be donated to the ‘Selfless Woman 2022’ Noeleen Stevenson who works under the FCS unit while some will be donated to the Vereeniging Magistrate Court for women in need.

“Stevenson was chosen as the selfless woman for 2022 after she displayed selflessness by always being willing to offer a helping hand and even going as far as adopting a home,” Rapulana said.
