Midvaal’s junior council elects Mayor and Speaker

The Midvaal Local Municipality's (MLM) Junior Council recently elected the new Junior Mayor and Junior Municipal Speaker. This follows the annual meeting that was held recently in order to carry out the elections.

MIDVAAL. – The Junior Council of MLM is made up by 16 young people from various high schools in the Midvaal vicinity. The group comprises of talented individuals with different backgrounds.

MLM Mayor Peter Teixeira says, “I am excited to announce that Itumeleng Phiri has been elected as the new Junior Mayor and Benjamin Laird has been elected as the Junior Municipal Speaker.

“The Junior Council program is a great initiative to not only engage with young people but to develop their interest in public and civic duty.”

Teixeira adds that the program further capacitates the youth with leadership skills and gives them a platform to engage the council on pressing issues and challenges the youth face.

“I look forward to having engagements with my junior counterparts and hearing the practical solutions that they have to positively contribute to the development of our municipality and its young residents.”
