Overnight ATM bombings leaves residents shocked

Many woke up to an aftermath despite loud bangs

EVATON – In the wee hours of Thursday morning., residents of Evaton, some parts of Sebokeng and Orange Farm were woken up by loud bangs as thugs feast on ATMs for cash.

When many made their way to work, they were met by disturbing scenes of police tapes all over a BP filling station in Evaton North.

The scene was as a result of an Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) being bombed by a gang.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Gauteng Provincial Police Spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo says, “Police are searching for a gang that allegedly bombed two ATMs in Evaton, in the early hours of this morning, Thursday 28 July 2022”.

Masondo said it is alleged that about eight suspects, some armed with firearms, stormed into the petrol station in Evaton, and held the employees and one patron at gunpoint.

“The suspects then allegedly bombed the two ATMs situated at the petrol station and took an undisclosed amount of cash. It is reported that more money and cigarettes were seized from the shop at the petrol station before the suspects hijacked a Toyota Quantum and escaped,” he said.

According to the Masondo, no shots were fired, and no injuries were reported.

“However, they hijacked a Toyota Quantum which was later found abandoned around Evaton.

“Police have opened a case of ATM Bombing, business robbery and car hijacking for investigation,” he said.

Social media went abuzz as residents tried to determine what the bombings could have been for.
