Maloka wants to ‘reclaim the Vaal’

The Sedibeng District Municipality (SDM) Executive Mayor, Lerato Maloka wants to see a district-wide government ecosystem that coordinates, aligns, integrates, and consolidates efforts of all three local municipalities under the district.

SEDIBENG.- She discussed this at the SDM State of the District Address (SoDA) at the Vereeniging Civic Theatre in Vereening last week. Three municipalities, the Midvaal Local Municipality, The Lesedi District Municipality, and the Emfuleni Local Municipality fall under the SDM.

The event was attended by Emfuleni and Midvaal Local Municipality’s Executive Mayors Sipho Radebe and Peter Teixeira respectively, members of the Mayoral Committees, Municipal Manager and various stakeholders. This year’s address was delivered under the theme “Reclaiming the Vaal”.

Maloka stated that during this term of office (2022-2026) the goal is to focus on building the district “for improved, efficient and impactful service delivery and local development” and to maximize its strategic capabilities to inform, coordinate and guide the work of the local municipalities.

“As a coalition government, we share a longing to make a climate conducive to creating job opportunities that will reduce the level of unemployment in the district,” said Maloka. She emphasized that “to reclaim the Vaal means to put an end to food insecurity and anxiety in our homes as to what children are going to it”.

The SoDA by Maloka also unveiled an ambitious drive to revitalize the industrial capabilities of Sedibeng region with the 5 Pillar Sedibeng Economic Revitalisation Strategic Plan anchored on the Vaal Special Economic Zone focusing on high high-growth sectors: agro-processing, agribusiness, food and beverage, cannabis farming, renewable energy, transport and logistics, and tourism and hospitality.
