Boipatong survivors lambast the government

The Gauteng MEC of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Mbali Hlophe said that the government is not the enemy of the people, on Friday.

BOIPATONG.- Hlophe requested patience from the members of the community during the commemoration to remember the victims and the survivors of the Boipatong Massacre of 17 June 1992. She also appealed to the to be close to government and stop pointing fingers as she responded to a stetement made by one of the massacre survivors, Maria Mosoetsa. Mosoetsa who was on tears when she spoke lambasted the government for failing to assist them. She said the only celebrations experienced in the province is that of June 16.

The Boipatong massacre took place on the night of 17 June 1992 in the township of Boipatong. The attack on township residents was carried out by armed men from the steelworks residence KwaMadala Hostel, which is located about 1 km from the township. Forty-five people died and several were injured.

“We have leaders who only think of themselves, Boipatong roads are in a mess of sewarage and non-service delivery. There is a huge cry from the community to alert the government that that it should not forget where we come from. The red carpet laid here for you to walk on does not have a meaning, especially to us the survivors. Our leaders have failed us drastically.”
